Description

Studies have shown that infants as young as 6 months of age are able to nonverbally categorize people by race and that by the age of 5 years old, not only do children categorize by race but actually demonstrate bias (Winkler, 2009).  When adults are silent about race, children will begin to make sense of the world around them through their social interactions and exposure to messages from the world around them.  Unfortunately, many of these messages are rampant with undertones that reinforce patriarchy, heterosexism, and Whiteness.  Through racial socialization, we have the power to filter which messages our children receive and to engage our children in complex thinking to challenge harmful messages.  Our children are not too young to talk about race and if not you, then who?
